I am Katie Swanson, a parent, creative spirit, and old house lover.
More specifically, I'm a former contractor with an interior design degree who left major renovations to raise my two sets of twins. I crochet, I garden, and I'm quickly becoming a crazy chicken lady along with my dog and cat. We have quite the menagerie over here, and I love every minute of it. My work is giving home owners a lift in understanding their homes and it making all homes work for modern needs without compromising on what gives old houses the life and charm we already enjoy. Design in an old home is all about conversations between different pasts and shared futures. |
My passion is old homes and building science. To understand how something works, I like to dig in past the "how" and into the "why." There are definitely places where I will share some of that knowledge here. It's allowed me to dive deep into understanding physics, mechanics, and electricity. I truly hope to use my home as a template for making old houses, and newer ones with similar wood-frame construction, last for centuries.
Making old homes last isn't all about nostalgia, it's also key to both sustainability and affordable housing. I hope to make a house that's maintainable and will continue to last. Our understanding of building science is always growing, especially as our climate continues to shift. With a little maintenance and a lot of love, I hope to help build a template that shows we can thrive by combining new technology and time-tested methods.
