We’re moving into the third week of the official One Room Challenge Timeline! And we made big strides this week in the closet. The custom designed closet system is coming together! And I am so excited with how this side turned out, and happy for my sister to have something that is going to function exactly for her needs. While it includes a lot of long term storage, the open storage is a game-changer in this case! And more closed storage will come later when we wrap up the bedroom. The construction has been fairly straightforward, as I used plywood and MDF to get the structure in place. While I had hoped to have the whole thing finished this week, I’m happy to have half. We stalled out because the weather was too good to work on Saturday, and with the end of Spring Break for my big kids and a migraine in my sister’s head… it was a much needed break from the hustle. Then I slowed a bit on Tuesday for the opposite reason: it was pouring rain. But the first side is wrapped up, all the rip cuts are done, and the next side should be pretty quick now that I have a good system in place. There are a ton of other projects happening right now too as part of the One Room Challenge sponsored by Apartment Therapy. I’ve been filing closet storage and bedroom ideas away mentally for a long time through projects on their sites. Head over here to check out this week’s challenge updates! Check out the scope of our current project, and see a little more of this primary suite in last week’s post! WallpaperI got started this week by adding the first of two wallpaper features to the back wall of the closet. This wallpaper sat in storage maybe a little too long… the glue had lost its stick! So, we went to the local wallpaper center and got traditional wallpaper glue: I was a little surprised with how well it worked on the Peel and Stick paper! Overall… I may be converted to using the traditional method. Working with peel and stick in my last several rooms hasn’t been bad, but working in a more traditional glue-up has changed the way I’m thinking about this particular artform. The Closet SystemThe system for storage was really based around what my sister knew she needed, and what storage they knew they had in dressers or other cases outside the bedroom. Mostly, she uses the closet for hanging space of some items, but relies on dressers for folded storage. Her biggest need in the closet is for shoes, bins, and hanging space. One of my favorite parts for this side was designing a jig to get the ceiling angle cut precisely on the vertical supports. While I could have measured each cut painstakingly, I had enough scrap from when we ripped down the supports that I instead made a template of the angle that I could then trace onto the board before cutting. I started with a scrap and cut it to the full length of the angled wall, then I simply attached two scrap pieces of lumber onto the ends. That way, the angle from the side to the eave and the eave to ceiling were both represented in the template. We also built in an existing dresser for “whatabout” storage. It’s perfect for occasional use items that seem logical to have in the bedroom, but don’t always have a designated place to go: things like extra bed linens can stay here instead of in the linen closet downstairs, and other personal items like swim suits and masks don’t take up much space, but still need somewhere to be. Next up on this one will actually be finishing the closet and moving back out into the main room. I still have the other side of the closet storage and the doorway to finish. I’m looking forward to getting this part buttoned up! We have a unique way to separate this spot from the rest of the room without reinstalling the door: stick around or check out the real-time updates over on Instagram!
